Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq elected as 15th Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir unopposed with historic mandate
Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq
Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq has made history by being elected as the 15th Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir on Thursday, winning an overwhelming majority with 48 votes out of 52 in the legislative assembly. His election came after the disqualification of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) Sardar Tanveer Ilyas by the AJK High Court in a contempt case. Earlier, the AJK assembly had adjourned its session for electing a new prime minister without holding the poll. The government had not submitted any nomination papers for the premiership, and the sudden development happened during an emergency meeting of the assembly, where Speaker Anwar-ul-Haq was elected unopposed. He received support from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), as well as his own forward bloc. In his inaugural address, he emphasized that he contested the election as an independent candidate and had the support of both PDM and PTI members. Chaudhry also reached out to opposition parties, setting a power-sharing formula in concert with them.
