Israeli Police Shoot Dead Arab Man in Al Aqsa Mosque Compound Scuffle

 


 On April 1, 2023, a security incident occurred near the Al-Aqsa compound, also known as the Temple Mount, in Jerusalem's Old City. Israeli police were on guard at the scene. According to a statement by the police, an Arab man, identified as 26-year-old medical student Mohammed al-Asibi from the Bedouin village of Hura in southern Israel, was shot dead after he grabbed a gun from an officer and fired it during a scuffle at the Al Aqsa mosque compound. The police claim that Asibi attacked them suddenly while he was being questioned and that they shot him in response to the danger they were in. However, Asibi's family has disputed this account, and Raam, the Israeli parliament's Islamist party, has rejected the police's version of events, citing witnesses who claimed that Asibi came to aid a woman who was in a scuffle with police. Mansour Abbas, Raam's head, also questioned the police's assertion that there was no footage of the alleged attack. The incident took place during a period of relative calm in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since the start of Ramazan, and there are fears that it could lead to a resurgence of violence during the holy month.
