RAWALPINDI: Tragedy Strikes Again as Bus Accident Claims 13 Lives and Injures 31 near Kallar Kahar

A devastating bus accident occurred on the Islamabad-Lahore Motorway near Kallar Kahar on Saturday, resulting in the loss of 13 lives, including five women, and leaving 31 others injured. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the February tragedy, where a bus plunged into a ravine, claiming the lives of 14 individuals from a wedding party and injuring 64 others after colliding with two cars and a truck. The previous crash was attributed to a burst tire.

In this latest incident, authorities reported that the driver lost control of the bus due to an apparent brake failure. The ill-fated bus, bearing the registration number BBA452 and en route to Jhang from Rawalpindi, was passing through Kallar Kahar at around 3:30 PM when the driver was unable to steer the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and overturn on the opposite track.

The victims, mostly hailing from Sahiwal and Jhang, were promptly rescued from the wreckage by the ongoing efforts of the police and rescue teams. The injured individuals were extricated by cutting through the bus and immediately transported to hospitals in Kallar Kahar and Rawalpindi. Among the injured were three young girls.

Upon receiving the news, DIG (Motorway) Mohammad Yousaf Malik and the Kallar Kahar police sector commander swiftly arrived at the scene to oversee the rescue operation. Initially, all the victims and survivors were rushed to Kallar Kahar hospital, and subsequently, eight of the injured were transferred to a hospital in Rawalpindi.

The deceased have been identified as Arooj, Fatima (wife of M. Raza), Rohan, Shan, Zaheer Fatima, Ameer Bibi, Imran, and Misha Bibi. Misha Bibi belonged to Rawalpindi, while the others were from Sahiwal and Jhang. Tragically, a woman and her two sons and daughter from Sahiwal were also among those who lost their lives.

The rescue operation remains ongoing as authorities work diligently to free any trapped victims and ascertain the identities of all the deceased.

Escalating Violence and Vigilantism Plague Haiti, Urgent International Action Needed

According to the UN Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), violence in the country's capital claimed the lives of over 600 people in the month of April alone. This follows a previous report stating that at least 846 individuals were killed in the first three months of 2023. Overall, BINUH reported a 28% increase in the number of victims of killings, injuries, and kidnappings in the first quarter of the year, with a total of 1,634 cases recorded. The UN human rights office (OHCHR) highlighted a rise in vigilantism, with mob killings and lynchings of alleged gang members becoming more frequent as "vigilantes take the law into their own hands." In April, at least 164 such murders were documented. The emergence of vigilante groups is attributed to calls made by certain political figures and journalists for citizens to form self-defense organizations to combat gang violence. The UN rights chief emphasized that such vigilantism will only contribute to a further escalation of vio...

Preterm Births: A Silent Crisis Impacts Millions of Babies Worldwide

Lack of Progress and Devastating Factors Amplify Preterm Birth Complications An estimated 13.4 million babies were born prematurely in 2020, and almost one million of them lost their lives due to complications related to preterm birth, as highlighted in the report titled "Born too soon: Decade of action on preterm birth." This comprehensive report, produced by organizations such as UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) in collaboration with the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH), sheds light on the urgency of addressing the long-underestimated magnitude and severity of this issue. Stagnant Progress and Emerging Challenges PMNCH Executive Director, Helga Fogstad, expressed concern that progress in maternal and newborn health, as well as the prevention of stillbirths, has reached a plateau.
